Hunting
The area around Wamego has more than 20,000 acres of public hunting land where whitetail deer, upland game, turkey and waterfowl roam and fly.

Stay in one of Wamego’s 80 hotel rooms. Most hunting and fishing supplies can be found at Wal-Mart in Manhattan. Hunting apparel can be found at Vanderbilt’s in downtown Wamego.

Wamego Riverfront Park and Access Ramp

For an eight mile stretch of river primed for duck hunting, put in at St. George and end at Wamego. Wamego’s boat ramp was completed in 2008 and future plans include a fishing pier, camping and picnic areas, restrooms and a parking area.

10 miles from Wamego, these 1,385 acres available to the general public 24 hours a day with uncontrolled access for hunting.

Pottawatomie State Lake #1

This 24-acre lake, 19.5 miles from Wamego, consists of 166 acres of wildlife area open to hunting and trapping. Animal population includes deer, turkey, fox squirrels, and bobwhite quail. Fish population includes Bluegill, Channel and Flathead Catfish, White Crappie, Green Sunfish, and Largemouth, Smallmouth and Spotted Bass.

Tuttle Creek Wildlife Area & Olsburg Marsh

33 miles from Wamego, this area boasts 12,200 acres of land licensed for wildlife management. A 1,500-acre waterfowl refuge is closed to all activities from Oct. 1 through Jan. 15.

Hunting Licenses:
A valid Kansas hunting license is required for all seasons, unless exempt by Kansas law.

Resident: $20.50
Residents under 16: No license required
Nonresident: $72.50
Nonresident under 16: $37.50


Hunting Permits:

All deer hunters will be required to have a deer permit that allows them to take an antlered deer before they may acquire an antlerless-only permit.  Permits may be purchased online at https://www4.wildlifelicense.com/ks/start.php


Deer Permit Options:

Any-season White-tailed Deer Permit (available over the counter) $32.50 general resident, $17.50 resident landowner, $17.50 all tenants – Valid for hunting white-tailed deer statewide during muzzleloader-only, archery, and firearms season using equipment legal during that season.

Nonresident White-tailed Deer Permit (by application and draw) $322.50 (includes a $21.50 nonrefundable application fee) – Valid for hunting in a designated management unit and one adjacent unit, using legal equipment for the deer season (muzzleloader-only, archery, or firearm) selected by the hunter upon application. Muzzleloader-only permits valid for use in early muzzleloader and regular firearms season using muzzle-loading equipment only; firearms permits valid for use in the regular firearms season using any legal firearm equipment; archery permits valid for use in the archery season using archery equipment only. For an additional fee of $102.50 submitted at time of application for a whitetail either sex permit, a nonresident who draws an archery or muzzleloader-only white-tailed deer permit valid in a mule deer unit may apply for one of a limited number of mule deer stamps. A mule deer stamp, if drawn by luck of the draw will convert the applicant’s white-tailed deer permit to an either species/either-sex deer permit. If unsuccessful in the mule deer stamp draw, you will receive a refund for $101.00 and be issued your whitetail either sex draw permit.*
