Throughout the months of November and December Wamego embraces this season of hope, giving and community harmony by celebrating with visits from Santa Claus, seasonal entertainment at the Columbian Theatre and more! Join us for the many activities that make this a wonderful time for family and also a season to comfort one another.

2017 Season of Lights / December 10

Carriage Rides

  • Take a ride on one of our two carriages. There will be a 6-person and a 12-person carriage available. Will load and unload at the Dutch Mill. If you want to be dropped off at the Columbian Theatre downtown let the driver know. Cash donation or non-perishable food item, new toy, toiletries for the Christmas Bureau

 

Santa & Mrs. Claus at School House (Prairie Village)

  • Visit Santa at the School House from 4-7 pm
  • Listen to a book read by Mrs. Claus on the lawn
  • Free treat for kids
  • Complimentary Photo with Santa courtesy of Reflections Photography

 

Iron Clad (Downtown)

  • Live Music
  • Elementary Schools Bookmark Contest Winners Displayed - Sponsored by the Junior League of Flint Hills
  • Children’s Activity – Crayon Pillow Project – Limited to 100 kids
  • Display of Model Trains
  • Personalized "doggy" ornaments- Paws for OZ fundraiser

 

Live Nativity (City Park near Prairie Village School House)

 

OZ Museum (Downtown)

  • Upside down Christmas Tree – the OZ version of a tornado during the holidays.
  • Oz characters to share good cheer / Photo Ops
  • OZsome Christmas presents available for purchase for friends, family or your employees.
  • Free admission from 4 to 7 pm (with donation of some sort a can food item)

 

Wamego’s Historical Museum (Prairie Village in Wamego’s City Park)

  • Spend a little time at this gem of the Wamego community and Discover Wamego’s history which traces the evolution of Wamego and Pottawatomie County from the first inhabitants, the Konza and Potawatomie Indians, to the history of the Underground Railroad in the area, and the artifacts brought back from the Columbian Exposition of 1893.
  • Enjoy Christmas Music on the porch by the High School Women's Ensemble and High Voltage.
  • Historical Society will be serving Hot Chocolate and Cookies.

 

 

Historic Columbian Theatre (Downtown)

  • Delight in some holiday merriment at the theatre’s open house.
  • There will be Star cookies for the first 500 people made by the Wamego High School FCCLA students.
  • Family Photo opportunity, so bring your smiles, plus photo ops with movie “Frozen” characters. Personalized “Star” commemorative ornaments available. 

 

Additional Holiday Fun

  • Children’s Train (4-5pm) – Weather permitting. 
  • OZ Winery is offering 15% off during festival. Great place to find wonderful Christmas gifts.
  • Wamego Public Library will be open and great time to view Gingerbread House competition.   
  • Tasty Traveler Food Truck will be serving delicious sandwiches, chili and so much more. Located at the Fountain in the City Park, look for the holiday lights.
  • Friendly Cooker will be open during festival, plus many other restaurants throughout Wamego.

November 4

  • Holly Fest: First Presbyterian Church (6th & Elm Streets) 9 am to 2 pm- Crafts, vendors, art, food, home-made pies, COOKIES BY THE DOZEN and so much more. All proceeds will go to support the First Presbyterian Church Women’s Group. (For more information call church office: 785-456-2556)

November 7 & Thursday, November 9

  • Gingerbread House Workshop: Wamego Public Library (431 Lincoln) a 2-night adult Gingerbread House Workshop.  Come learn all you need to know about building a holiday Gingerbread House. Space limited to 10 participants, $10 covers all supplies for both nights. (For more information call: 785-456-9181)

November 11-18

  • Trees with a Mission on Display at Iron Clad: All proceeds benefit Community Health Ministry. More information is found on this web site. November 12

  • Stitch-N-Stuff:  12-2 pm St. Bernard Parish Hall  Soups, Quilt Raffle, Bingo and Market

November 16

  • OZ Winery Holiday Open House: 5 to 7pm / 417 Lincoln.  There will be hors d'oeuvres and wine pairings. plus 15% discount that evening on all purchases.  (For more information call: 785-456-7417)

  • Christmas lights galore throughout town and in City Park

  • Annual Pie Sale: This yearly event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.  Starts at 8am on Wednesday morning at the library and pies are for sale until they are gone. They will go fast, so DO NOT DELAY. All pies are homemade. Prices are $10 for pumpkin and $15 for all others.  Anyone that would like to donate a homemade pie should contact the library.   • Community Thanksgiving Dinner: St. Bernard Hall 12-2 pm Open to all!

November 25

  • 11th Annual Sylvester’s Holiday Light Show (Hwy 99 – South of Wamego) This Holiday light show starts Thanksgiving weekend (weather permitting) and runs through January 2nd.   Over 40,000 lights synchronized to music. Head south on K99 toward Interstate 70 approximately 2.5 miles. The display is on the east side of the road, just look for the giant reindeer. There is a circle drive and parking (weather permitting) in the field directly adjacent to the drive.

·         Gingerbread House Fun Family Night – Bring your family and enjoy decorating gingerbread houses! All supplies provided. Location is at the Wamego Public Library Storytime Room.   • The Feast of Carols -  7th and 8th Grade Bands and Choir starts at 6:30 p.m. and the High School performs at 7:45 p.m.  The concert is at the WHS Auditorium.  For more information: wamegobands.org

  • Scholastic Holiday Book Fair:  What better gift than a book for a child!?  The library will have new Scholastic books on sale at the library during all business hours including the Season of Lights event.  The WAMEGO children’s book, “Wamego, Exploring the Place We Call Home”, will also be for sale. All proceeds benefit reading programs at the library. (For more information call: 785-456-9181)

December 7        

  • Bank of the Flint Hills 9th Annual Holiday in the Park:

    Join us at the Wamego City Park Train Depot for a magical night of lighted carriage rides and sitting with Santa. Build your custom hot chocolate at our hot chocolate station! Open to the public from 6 - 8 pm. Admission is $3 or 5 cans of food per person. All proceeds go to the Wamego Christmas Bureau. (*Weather dependent. Cancellations will be posted to the Bank & Visit Wamego Facebook pages.)

  • Season of Lights: Wamego City Park - 4pm to 7pm  Visit Santa in the school house in City Park, have dinner at the Tasty Traveler food truck, warm up with hot chocolate and cookies at the Historical Museum, be entertained by WHS High Voltage and women's ensemble, ride the horse drawn carriage-just bring a donation for the Christmas Bureau.
  • Season of Lights: Iron Clad - 427 Lincoln  Free children's craft for the first 100 children.  Model train on display.

Trees with a Mission / November 11- 18

COMMUNITY HEALTH MINISTRY IS KICKING OFF CHRISTMAS WITH A WEEK OF FESTIVE ACTIVITIES!!!

 

SATURDAY NOV.11 (10am – 2pm)

  • Join us at Iron Clad to enjoy and bid on the beautiful trees, wreaths and center pieces.
  • Also, your children can “Write a letter to Santa!”
  • You have a chance to make a personalized ornament!
  • There will be live entertainment from the Columbian Winter Theatre Academy
  • Have your picture taken with 8’ Gingerbread House
  • Hot cocoa and treats will be served.

 

SUNDAY NOV.12 (12pm – 3pm)

  • Open House at Iron Clad! Many beautiful things to bid on: decorated trees, wreaths and center pieces.
  • Enjoy the Columbian Christmas Singers; Guitarist Nate Hernandez and more.
  • Coffee and holiday treats will be served

 

NOVEMBER 13-16 BY APPOINTMENT ONLY TOURS

  • Clubs and organizations, plan on an outing to the Iron Clad to see the beautiful holiday decorations!

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17 (12pm – 3pm)

  • Holiday Open House at Iron Clad! Many delightful things to bid on decorated trees, wreaths and center pieces.

 

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 18 (5PM—8PM) AN EVENING ON LINCOLN

  • Start the evening at the Oz Winery to enjoy a mulled wine. 5:00pm. OZ Winery will offer 20% off for any “Evening on Lincoln” participants.  Pick up your punch card there.  No purchase required to get your punch card.
  • Stroll on down to the IRON CLAD for the last hours of Community Health Ministry’s TREES WITH A MISSION silent auction. Place a bid and start your holiday activities by helping Community Health Ministry, who in return helps others. Be sure to get your card punched. Also, Pianist LEROY JOHNSON will be performing from 6:00 to 8:00pm. BIDDING will close for all decorated trees, wreaths and center pieces at 8:00pm.
  • Then on to the Columbian Theatre and Art Center. Get your card punched and leave it in the drawing basket by 9pm.  Drawing winner will be announced Sunday morning. Enjoy the art gallery or attend the Gatsby Gala. (Purchase tickets in advance.)

Christmas Lights in Wamego

There are many wonderful Christmas lights throughout Wamego from Thanksgiving Day and then throughout the Christmas season.  Load up friends and family, grab a nice cup of coffee or hot chocolate at Paramour Coffee Shop, Short Stop or Last Stop and cruise around Wamego and enjoy all that twinkles this season.
